What We Learn of Living Through the Death of Friend
On Dec 22, 2011 a long time friend, Nancy, died.
Twelve days later was her 60th birthday. We gathered in the home she and her husband built recently, a beautiful, creative, artistic home. People from many of the circles she moved in came together to honor the life she lived.
We visited the altar with her ashes, looked at pictures, shared stories, hugged her partner who now knows the initiation of being widowed. What I did not say to anyone yesterday was that Nancy's life, in her final days, inspired me to step up with even greater commitment and courage than I ever have. (And I've been committed and courageous for many years in many ways.) The life I'm now creating for myself and the businesses I'm forming are, in part, unleashed in me in thanks to Nancy's passing.
I've been preparing for this for years, perhaps all my life. But today I have a clarity of purpose beyond what I've known before. This year will be the birth of a new global company that I have been invisioning since I was 10 years old. New partnerships, alliances, collaborations will form. I'll be heading up new broadcasts and productions to offer more life-affirming, transformational and "change the world by listening to and answering your soul" mentoring, programs, classes, retreats and products.
It's timely, isn't it, the way we say as a new year begins, "This year will be ____."
Our individual and collective prophesying about 2012, our hopes, intentions, goals, desires and commitments that come gushing out as January peaks out from under the wintery nights. This year is different. More urgent. More now.
Nancy's life -- and the end of it -- reminds me that "Life is urgent. Life is now."
It always was. It always is. It will be until you're not living it.
One year ago, Nancy did not know that she would spend many months in ICU, or that she would need (and receive) a bone marrow transplant. She began the year 2011, I'm sure, with the same kind of assumptions I did, and maybe as you did. Assuming the year ahead would be another unfolding opportunity to learn and love, to grow and build, to heal and prosper. And there would be time and more time for whatever else didn't get lived that year. Surely, when she ordered the new bed for their home, she did not imagine that she would not ever have the experience of sleeping in it.
As this year of 2012 begins I invite you to join me in raising your intentions to the highest, most exquisite expressions of life you can imagine... and then more.
And begin today, if you haven't already, to be the person who is living and expressing your intentions as REAL and NOW. Not something you're becoming or achieving. Be YOU now. Fully.
- What do you Love? Do that.
- What wakes you up to your PASSION for LIFE? Be that.
- What has you experience yourself as ALIVE? Live that.
- What are you hanging onto that continues to hold you back or perpetuates your pain? Let that go.
I welcome you to share your passions, intentions, commitments here. Being seen and heard is a sacred gift we share in community. Seeing and being seen. Hearing and being heard. This is one of the practices in creating intimacy I discovered and shared with Nancy in the early years of our friendship. Join in, will you?
